If you have been wondering what the average age of marriage is around the world – or what the average age to get married in America is, you might be in for a surprise…
According to studies, marriage as a whole has been declining over the past 50 years. For instance, in 1960, roughly 15 percent of adults over 18 years of age were never married. Since then, the percent has climbed to 28 percent. The average age of marriage by state and average age of marriage in America have both gone up in the last few decades.
In the meantime, the average age of marriage for people getting married for the first time has also climbed with the average age of marriage in 1960 being 20.8 years (women) and 22.8 years (men) to 26.5 years (women) and 28.7 years (men). Additionally, the trend for millennial’s seems to be shifting where average age of marriage goes well into the 30’s.
There are also variances in average age of marriage by state. New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey have the highest average age for marriage for couples getting married for the first time, while Utah, Idaho, Arkansas, and Oklahoma are among the lowest average age of marriages.
